Croissants, which everyone thinks is a french pastry, were named after Islam's symbol of the Crescent and 'invented' during the Siege of Vienna (1529). This battle saw the deepest penetration of Islam in Christian Europe, its defeat and subsequent pushing back to its current borders of Istanbul.
Of course at the time it was meant to be deprecatory - a fluffy pastry to be eaten by the mobs of hungry 'christian' soldiers.
Thus not the first time pastry are at the forefront of tensions and conflicts!
