I always try to wear something that's really scary for Halloween whenever I decide to dress up. Over the years I've found that less is more. The plainer the costume, the more that is left to the viewers imagination. I think I really hit it this year.

I wore this costume tonight to a "harvest party". When I got there with my son (dressed as a special forces operative with a fishing hook in his cheek), I began to feel a bit stupid since we were the only ones in costume (except for a few really young children).

Soon, my feelings changed to pleasant satisfaction. Kids were saying to me (and to themselves), "You're not real." I'd just stand there. Sometimes I'd go from staring straight ahead to just moving my eyes to look at them...and they'd freak. When I would move toward them, they would run and/or scream. One kid in the bouncing room didn't come out until after I had taken the mask off? Why? Because the chief of the event had come up to me and asked me to remove the mask (since it wasn't a mask event). He also checked to make sure I was there with my kid. I could tell some parents were "concerned" as well as their wee ones clung to them of comfort. It was awesome since I could smile and chuckle all I wanted underneath that cold, emotionless exterior. Of course, the older kids (6-10) thought it was fun, being a little scared and not totally sure I was safe while testing their steel by talking to me and inching closer with every query. Pretty fun evening.

You can bet I'm going to wear it again tomorrow night when I take my boy out door to door. ;)
