I am running a S3 SonicVib pci sound card and it has ran well for every game I play from doom2 to
armagetron, bzflag, wolfmpdemo, as well as wolf et. I could have something configed wrong somewhere but I am at a loss

Hmmm not sure what to say. I have Slackware 10.1 and kernel 2.4.29 and I am using a sounblaster card and I have had no problems with sound. You might want to check out the garagegames website and see if they have anything about it. They do have a forum for linux users. Sorry I coudn't be of more help.

[edit] btw I do have esd. So ya maybe you do need it.
