Control+P takes a screenshot and saves it to your resources folder.

Command-shift-3 takes one and puts it on your desktop, but its in pdf format. Grab can do it too (TIFF).

Best way is what Spunky said:

Command-shift-3 can sometimes leave lines through your image.

Assuming it's in your dock, hold down the Control key and click the TT icon. Choose Show In Finder

Next, hold down your Control key and click the TT icon. Choose: Show Package Contents

Open Contents, then look in the Resources folder. Your screenshots will be there.
The next time you take screenshots, they will be overwritten with the new ones, so Copy them to another folder.

The Apple shift 3 works for me.

Just a side note about taking pictures of the desktop.

Apple + Shift + 3 = Full screen shot

There is also:
Apple + Shift + 4 = defined area
when you type Apple + Shift + 4 your curser becomes a cross hair allowing you to select a specific area
and
Apple + Shift + 4, space bar = window snapshot

The problem with apple screen shot is that the image on your desktop is PDF. Most online image hosting sites like Image Shack only accept.bmp.jpg.gif.tiff.swf.
So...
Get iMage , a free little app (100 kb) that will quickly translate any image file in seconds.

Mac OS X also ships with the Grab utility, located in the Applications -> Utilities folder. To use Grab, double-click on its icon and choose the type of image you want to capture.

Grab supports three modes of screen capture:

- Selection: Select the region you want to capture using the mouse
- Screen: Capture the entire screen
- Timed Screen: Capture the entire screen after a specific time interval
