My co-worker's relatives captured this photo.

They had covered a dead deer with leaves in the woods and set up a motion activated camera to take shots to see what sort of wildlife came by. They have some pictures of a coyote, a bobcat and other animals. There's a red patch in the mid-right side of the photo were animals have been eating on the deer.

Then there was this single photo. There was actually a crow in this photo in the tree, but its been cropped out. They're not sure of the "animal" in this photo set off the camera or the crow.

Generally, the office think's its either a bear or Chewbacca, but in WV, it should be a black bear and Chewy's "far, far away." :)

I'm pretty sure black bears don't get that big, as well as the amount of red in the fur. Have your friends tried to guess how tall it is?

@Chief - Well, it looks as tall, even taller than the length of the deer under the leaves. We agreed that the red is in the deer's rump. I've asked my friend to send me the original photo (uncropped) as well as some other photos with recognizable animals that had stopped by in order to compare them to this one.

Really, the shape of it doesn't make a lot of sense. It does look like the forelegs of some brown animal are up on the carcass. It also looks like a racoon or squirrel is on top of that.

I think it will help to have the other photos, just so we can see how the trees look.

Come on now, that's not Chewbacca, even though it looks remarkably like him. You can tell it's not because he's missing his trademark metal bandolier. ;)

@Rabban- if your co-workers managed to capture some more photos, it might reveal what this really is. As it is, with that being the only shot, it could be a trick of angles and light playing on a bear. Who knows?

Well - if you look at the trees, it looks like the sunlight is coming from the right side (from the camera's perspective).

Based on the angle that whatever-the-hell-it-is is standing, the black can't be a shadow.

Would help to know how tall the pile of leaves is and how far behind that the tree with the long branch is.

My guess based on an avg deer - 8-10 feet tall.

Can't make it out. Hmmm...looks like those dudes that wear fur shirts and pants and have racoon hats.

I took a few moments to look at the photo. I increased the contrast and saw what looked to be the snout of a bear. Here's a quick demonstration of my findings. I outlined the areas that I thought looked as though could be a bear and its parts.

If you zoom in it looks like the bear MM highlighted but instead of the position he had it at, it looks like its front paws are resting on that mound and its head is pointed up toward the sky.
