I've always thought of it as more like football, where you've got a running back or two, a full back, and an offensive line. Basketball makes more sense though doesn't it. Cool.

Hockey is another similarity. NBA has too many pauses between action events.

Luke Longley. Awesome.
It's a bit of a hybrid this game, what with the shooting and everything. More later, tempus fugit.

I've always noticed an eerie resemblance of the dynamics of ThinkTanks Team Scrum and the NBA. Huh? What's Pai talking about? Has he lost his mind? No really, follow me on this. There is a lot of similarity between a good team scrum squad and an NBA squad. Both have 5 players and each player usually fills a role in each given game. They are:
2 guards (two good scrum runners who control the ball/flag)
2 forwards (two butt blasters...power forwards...who chase opposing guards/scrum runners, defend the goal, etc.)
1 center (the goal tender, big kahunna, who protects the perimeter of the goal, usually the best blaster)
Obviously, most players can switch roles instantly depending on the game and even their position in relation to the position of the flag and goal. Some players excel at all three positions (Tally Ho, Bolo and Memphis come to mind). Some try but fail to do the trick. Learning which position you excel in is an important thing to learn in successful team scrum play. Not everyone can be LeBron James or Shaq! (tip of the cap to Stinkfingers who posted a great thread months ago where he ranted about this subject and how players need to be more team oriented and stop trying to be Shaq when they're really Luke Longly).
The other thing that reminds me of the NBA is the way we sometimes score with high flying gravity defying leaps and slam dunks! The passing is also exhilerating and loads of fun. We also block and reject shots like they do in the NBA.
We also set picks and block opponents to help teammates score...etc. Etc.
