I called myself Spunky because of my Spunk. Easy enough.
Now I'm interested in hearing why Racer calls himself his name! %)
Spunk
@TG: Movie? It was okay, but the comic books are much more hysterical!
Macr0t0r is two parts:
Mac = M.A.C. = Military and Civilian. I'm in the National Guard. I work at NASA in the AMES Research Center in my civilian life, and I'm a 1st Lieutenant Executive Officer for an Armor Company for the National Guard. Of course, I've been strictly military for the last 1.5 years for this "war on terrorism." <sigh>
I'm an Apple convert, so now the name fits very well. ;)
R0t0r = Rotor. In NASA, I work on control systems for Helicopters. You ought to see my remote-controlled AutoGyro (personally owned, not NASA obviously). Hmmmm....actually you can! Below are the 2 links for the 2 parts of my name.
Me and my remote-controlled auto-gyro

Long white beard and pointy head.
I am a big fan of golden age Science Fiction. One of the first book series I read was The Lensman Series by E.E. 'Doc" smith. Think star wars but give it an even more space opera feel. The main Character in the Later part of the series is "Kimball Kinnison" the end result of secret thousands of years long genetics program. The problem I had was "kimball" was not the right person to be driving tanks around, so I quickly switched to his long time 'sidekick' Vanbuzkirk, or 'Buzz"
Buzz is the Galatic Patrols best space marine. He comes from Valeria which gravity is 3 times that of earth. A rather comical character, but when there is someone 8 feet tall 4 feet wide that can jump 12 feet into the air. That is something to fear. I carry the name proudly and carry on his battles in the tank. His favorite thing to do is hit a jump pad and attack fire on other tanks while in the air
Well ya see best time of year is winter so the Snow in my name is taken care of and because Ravens are cool and smart.well there ya go I actually explained my name :P
Bolo is my nickname that everybody uses. It started 1 night during a band practice when I was in "volatile". I got really pissed and was stinkin drunk and started acting like the guy called "bolo" on bruce lee's "enter the dragon" They started calling me that and it stuck. My previous name was killemall98 cause killemall is my favorite metallica album and 98 is when I graduated hight school. It was my hacker code name but when I went to college everyone knew it was me so I had to change that to something else in case I need to use some skilz... Molo, molon, molex, bolpheous, bolex are some drunken derivatives.....
@Bolo: So you aren't named after the classic Mac tank game Bolo ? Or the Bolo tank books by Keith Laumer? Heh, what a strangly topical name to drunkenly stumble upon...
-- "56k Lag Man" because my modem was slow as I tied up the phone lines... No longer the case, but '1.5Mb Lag Man' doesn't have the same ring to it...

Well, I really truly am Dan Macdonald. About 2 or three years ago I realized that a good portion of the people I would consider my friends were people I had met online and were scattered all over the globe. At that point I realized that being online was just about as real and relevent as interacting with people IRL. Since then I've decided to be the same person online and off.
Because you end up getting lessons from me in TT...booya! Nickname a buddy game me...for my mad teaching skillz.
I have always used Racer44 or Racer445 everywhere. I like the name becuse:
1) I have over 20 racing games
2) I am a novice RC Car racer
3) I LOVE to drive Go-Karts, tractors, the simulators down at Daytona (Last Time I went down there. They were a blast to drive!) You name it!

Racer445
When I was trying to come up with a name, I wanted to be original. I wanted to make a word up. So I thought and thought and thought, and finally came up with baklava. Soon after choosing the name people began asking me why I was named after a pastry. So I hadn't been completely original, but like the name so I kept it.

I LOVE this thread so far. This is awesome. Good for a laugh, and very interesting. Thanks SO MUCH to everyone who has posted so far.
@Dan, I went the reverse direction that you did. I used to have my real name associated with my online correspondence in forums, chats, games, etc. But after a while I found that it wasn't a good idea for me....All related to me being a woman. Men can be really abusive and vile to women through the cloak of anonymity. I now usually use non gender-specific names, or lean toward male names just to avoid the problems associated with male-anonymity abuse.
Coming out as TankGirl has been a roller coaster ride of an experiment. I decided to be myself and not hold anything back. As a result I have had many great highs and some really devastating (disturbing) lows. I have made some HUGE mistakes along the way as I try to understand how much of ME this (99%male) TT community will tolerate.
Anyway, the experiment continues and I am very happy to be associated with you guys.
:-)

@ TG I think I've said this before. DEMO's play was battlemode. Didn't even know of SCUM. Thought everyone was either a hunter or prey. The orignal Tank Girl drove me to buy the game. I'd chase in my medium as DEMO(PREY) and she would go half way down a cliff and shoot purple bubbles up at me. Got the key became PREY - lite and never saw her again. Ran into this guy Tally Ho though. Errrr kill Tally!
Also met z, who battled 15 robots vs 1 in Team Scum with non-expiring timer. He was leading 150 to 10... My wife Entree and I joined. She wouldn't go after the ball. Z collected it and crashed into her to force a score. Ah the early days....
All the greats wore #44 -- Reggie, Ernie Davis, Hank Aaron, Jim Brown...and so, so many more.
Plus, I love saying "fo fo fo fo" when I've scored four goals, and "fi fo fo fo" at five goals. Corny? Yes. Does it make me laugh? Every time.

MOE.
Not the 3 stooges MOE Larry & curly, not MOE The lawn, not MOEron just to make it clear.
;)
MOE. Is a jam band that is awsome. If you like jamming music--find the band called "MOE." and get a live cd. You'll be glad you did.

In the earliest days of the Great Rebellion of the Brains (GRB, also code-named 'Operation Garbage'), I was in the first wave of courageous brains that broke in the Alien Mind Control headquarters. I was the one who pressed the purple 'Brain Smoke Release' key, thus freeing the millions of small brains that were toiling in the iron mine on Pituary Plateau.
News of the rebellion quickly broke out, and Alien Mind Control sent his armies to stop us. We fought a long protracted battle, and the tide turned many a time. We finally triumphed after WAY too many hours staying up playing, and half our fellow brains lying wasted forever.
Then the core of us of the old guard, before we had our current names (Tank Dork, Tally Ho, Azazel, Prey, Tankster, FP, Jangles and many others) decided to create a Fellowship of the Tank and to pursue the rebellion on every maps of the universe. It was then that I was christened 'Hugobrain' for my capacity at orchestrating team play and my intuitive role-shifting (from runner to camper to blocker to prankster to passer).
You know your team will win when Brain's in da game.
@TG, I hear ya, for you I think a little anonymity goes a long way ;) You definitely have a knack for keeping people on their toes! However being the unique individual you are, you also present a nice target to people who have their own deep seeded issues and feel the need to lash out at people. Giving your real name to people like this only opens you up to be hurt by them.
I've never seen the tank girl film, but I think your TT name suits you.
Mah fingers kinda stink....kinda sticky too. That would have been a good name...
Jeez, I don't even remember..
All I know is that I was trudging through the apple site's mac os x downloads, and I saw this game called thinktanks. I said, oh what the heck, maybe it'll be cool, and downloaded it. The very first name I picked was *, DEMO(*). I was only a demo for about a week, ever since then I've been * all the way. I don't even remember why I picked it, except that it looks cool, "Asterisk" is a neat word, and it's an interesting punctuation mark, used most often for correcting spelling mistakes (lol), as in if you say asteriks, then you say asterisk* to note the correction. The Asterisk is also used to block out swear words and signal when you have more to say at the bottom of the page. I don't know, it just seems to fit me..
Asterisk
Every one always wonders about "Him"
Damn "Him"
"Him" again
What are we going to do about "Him"
I would have scored if it hadn't been for "Him"
From the movie Kelly's Heros, Clint Eastwood and Telley Sevalis lead a goup of US soldiers on a hunt for Nazi gold near the end of WWII, with the help of Donald Sutherland as Oddball, a rogue tank commander.
I was also : for a while, for it stealthyness, but its much more fun with a name.

I like computers and all so I thought I should become...
CYBERTANK OF TANKSPACE!
Weren't ready for that hehe XD
@Oddball,
"Woof-Woof". Where is the loudspeaker on your tank....and what about the paintball shells?
Kelly's Heros = one of my favorite war movies....."I think that I shall kill you twice"
@Hugo,
What an awesome post. I love the story of your name. Thanks for the story.

Ben: Well, duh.
(SA): Also fairly self-explanatory.
Based on both my personal and professional interest in our Earth. I'm a Hydrogeologist (environmental resource protection and cleanup) by trade and a rock hound, trail hiker and map lover by heart.
Great namesakes, Oddball and MP! And TG: Lori Petty - VERY kinky sexy... Great choice! Great thread!

Thanks TG, GO! I picked it cause it also reflects my CDN identity, Donald is Canadian. I love it, but have never seen it in its entirety. Stars a handful of well known actors too, Don Rickles, Carrol O'Conner.
I also love Patton;l "We're going to rip out their living guts, and use them...to grease the treads of our tanks."
Paintball shells, hmmm, that would make a good Power-up! -z-?

@Him I thought Him was about the CannonBall series with Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise... Dom Dom Dah, Him will protect us.
@Ge0rge You work for the USGS or EPA?
I have the name Con because its my nickname. My real name is Conrad :P :'( :S ;)
Well mine is very simple to figure out. XD
From an Historian friend of Granpa Sluggy:
Sorry it has taken so long to respond to your questions about Slugthog Assgard. Historical references to this person are very few and most Medievalists I talked to at PSU were either unaware of his existence or considered him merely a very minor legendary character. To my knowledge, and the knowledge of my collegues, what few minor references there are have not been translated from the original Latin into English. That is probably why you found no references to him on the Internet.
As is often the case during the Medieval period most records were written and kept by literate monks in the monastaries. Slugthog (the Assgard name seems to have been a later addition) was considered something of a raffish, less than noble character. Of course, even if he had existed his life history would have been greatly embellished. Scurrulous gossip was recorded as well as fact.
There is a single intriguing reference placing him in Charlemagne's army in Charlemagne's failed attempt to rescue Rolande. However, most of the few references we have place him in Flanders. Posssibly another wandering Viking warrior who settled in the very terrritory he was raiding, similar to the Vikings who took and held Normandy (Duke Rolf or Rollo). He apparently was short of stature but a skilled warrior who favored the Viking bearded axe in battle. Due to his short legs he apparently preferred to fight on foot rather than on horseback. He was also referred to as redbearded but that may have been a misrecording of redhanded, a reference to his bloody warrior status.
Probably the most interesting, but least reliable, reference comes centuries after his reputed time. The eldest son of William the Conqueror was Robert of Normandy. As eldest son he inherited his father's dutchy and the title of Duke of Normandy. He was called Robert Curthose ( or bandy legs), a reference to his short legs, unsuitable for a knight, who needed to be a skilled horseman. This obscure reference blames this physical trait on the line of his mother, Matilda of Flanders, who was the daughter of Count Baldwin of Flanders. Matilda was a tiny woman, who notheless, managed to bear the hulking William eight children. This reference speculates that Robert inherited his short legs from Matilda's distant ancestor, Slugthog, known as the Dwarf.
Beyond this not much else is really history. There are many characters like Slugthog in Ancient and Medieval history. Did he really exist? Or was he an interesting fiction? The reality may never be known but often what was an obscure basis in fact becomes the stuff of legend.

Ah, and I thought it was something to do with slugs.
@Gnomie :P
@slugthog:interesting history about vikings and the like.i got this little thing that has nothing to do with this thread or my TT name.just something to do with vikings. Apparently somewhere in my house is a record of my family that goes back to the early 1200's in sweden so my family was probaly related to vikings in some way. But I can't read half of it because it is in swedish. :[
@PREY: Neither, actually. I work for a private consulting firm that does work for EPA, DOD, DOE, private industries, municipal water supplies, etc, etc...
And sluggy I think there was an "n" where an "m" shoulda been...

Interesting story sluggy, but unless I missed something( which I probly did since I skipped half of it) you didnt say why you chose the name
Interesting thread. Isn't it funny how we aquire nicknames due to events and associations.
Mine is faily simple and based on the concept of the game. Aliens stealing human brains and sticking them in tanks for their own amusment. Well what if they dropped one? I'm sure aliens make mistakes too. So my name is implying a condition = brain damage.
Ill post my first thread on this foshizzy Forum. Slug thats sum interesting story. Kinda fell asleep at the 2nd paragraph. Jk. My Tank name is for a German Tank used ages ago. People will start talking to me in german and ill just ignore them. Bleh its my nature to be stealthy silent and deadly.
Ill see you on the battlefield. B)
You wouldn't happen to know that Blitzkrieg is a chess opening that'll win you the game in five turns, did you? Awfully fun against those who don't know how to defend it.
Somebody else has seen Kelly's Heros! At last! I have found my home!
"Always with them negative waves!"
"It makes....pretty colors! Just scares the hell out of 'em!"
You guys don't know how accurately they show tankers. We have lounge chairs tied to our bussel racks. On training missions, we store drinks in the grenade launchers (got to put them to use if we don't have grenades!).
-macr0t0r
Macr0t0r,
Kelly's Heros!
"Burning bridges lost forever more." (from the opening and closing song)
I love that movie.
Thanks for the explanation Sluggy. My query about the name was a while ago but this was a good thread to post it on. My name is simple - first name and short/modified last name to indicate my preference in computers. Originally started using the name to bother my PeeCee friends.
DanMac
@ Blitzkrieg;
Actually, Blitzkrieg means "ligthening war" in German, and was the tactic the Nazis developed using close co-ordination of tanks, infantry, and air support to plow across Poland, Belgium and France. Fortunately this tactic did not work across the vast expanses of Russia.
I don't beleive there was ever a German tank called Blitzkrieg, but still a very appropriate TT name esp. If you drive Light.
@ Asteriks; I always thought you were Asterix , the fiesty little Gaul.

Well, guess I'll chime in to educate the masses, XD
Leopard as I use it is derived from two sources, first and the most obvious- is the cat itself. The Leopard is one of the most deadly and efficient hunters in the cat phylum, silent and nasty. As well the Leopard is the only cat that will lift 3x it's own weight , drag it's prey into an elevated area- such as a tree to safeguard it from scavangers - such as quitter and the likes of that ilk. Lol B)
See link below
http://www.afunk.com/mammals/leopard/
2ndly, Leopard is also currently one of the worlds best main battle tank's, in handling and armour it is equal to most and is also the backbone of the Canadian forces armoured core. And yes I have been in one, even though I was airforce.

I believe I posted these links elsewhere in other threads, in response to questions about what OM means.
I have to admit that it's difficult to properly explain what "OM" is to players in game when I get the inevitable "What is om?" query.
So, here is one excellent article that goes deep into some origins, and breaks the meaning down.
Although the symbol is most often associated with Yoga practice, in truth, OM is a Sanskrit pictograph that represents the various states of human consciousness. OM encompasses all states, including the highest state of peace and bliss, represented by the "dot" on top, which is said to be the ultimate goal of spiritual activity.
For more, read the article. It explains it in more detail than I care to write about here on this forum.
As for why I chose it; I've always been a spiritual person, which I may add, does not necessarily mean religiously devout, because I am not. I subscribe more to being a spiritually good person, rather than to any Western type of religious beliefs.
Although it may seem strange to some people, I believe we are all our own little gods, capable of doing more than we often give ourselves credit for. So, my mantra is to be "one with the universe". Inside TT, I extend this to being "one with my tank" XD XD :P
Hope that explains things.
OM
@Leopard I take exception to dragging PREY into trees... I'm against it.
I will shoot you, with no predjudice.

Ages and ages and ages and ages and age.... Okay, I'll stop now. XD
Nigh upon 20 years ago, there was a game on the Apple ][+ called The Bilestoad. In this game, you controlled an android, armed with axe and shield, and fought in single combat against other androids, either computer or player controlled. To control your bot, you had to work 10 keys simultaneously: 3 for the axe (left, right and stop), 3 for the shield (left, right and stop), three for the body (left, right.... Ok, I'll stop again) and 1 on the joystick to run forward. Back then this was some challenging stuff. You'd run around the map, looking for your opponent, and once you found him you'd start pressing all these keys and try to kill him before he killed you.
The game remembered what difficulty level you were at by having each player enter a code word. Using that codeword, at each level of difficulty it would generate a new 3 letter code. Enter your codeword and the 3 letter code and it would put you onto the proper difficulty level. When you entered, a little text would pop up saying "Welcome to The Bilestoad, JDQ!". At the highest level, level 40, the greeting changed. My 3 letter code for level 40 was TMO. "Welcome to The Bilestoad, Master TMO!" And thus, a legend was born....
I have been Master TMO, or TMO, ever since.
PS - Oh, forgot to mention the teleporter pads and scooter pads you could use as well. The scooter pads were the most fun. Hop on one and you'd just start whizzing around the map. Move your shield in front of you, hold your axe out to the side, then ride down on your helpless opponent and just drive your axe into him. Very similar to a mounted knight riding by a foot soldier. Great Fun!

Hi again, Yes I know, I never shut up. I just like to get people talking.
I am curious to know what your TT name means to you. Why did you choose your particular name?
My name is taken from an "actionista" cult favorite movie titled "TankGirl". I obviously chose this name to broadcast that I am a woman and because I thought the character in the movie was bizarre and fun.
