First off, sorry if this has been asked before. I looked through the forums and didn't see anything like this, but I could have missed it.

Anyway, last night I tried to host a server, a dedicated server off my Mac, but the room didn't show up for anyone that was attempting to join. After some questioning, I realized that the router I have hooked up to my Cable modem was probably blocking connections.

So, my question is, short of disconnecting the router and plugging the cable modem directly into my Mac, which I'd rather not do, does anyone know what needs to be done in general terms to make this work? For example, what settings can be changed on the router? Just FYI, I have a Linksys 4-port Cable/DSL router. I can get into the config page easy enough, but I'm a little unclear what needs to be disabled/enabled to allow others to see my dedicated server.

Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

OM

And I am having the same problem with a dsl connection, so can someone help me out?

I did an internet search with my router's name and "service ports" and found instructions on how to enable the ports. I opened ports 28000 - 28002. Post back with your progress or hopefully success.

@Michael-

That was me who posted that question. Do u have a router hooked up between your DSL and your computer? Are you on a Mac? Do you have a Linksys router as well? Info on what to do can be found on this thread . (it loads slowly) Close to the bottom there are some screenshots and info on Port forwarding.

Post back here (not on that thread) if you still need help after that.

OK then. To get to that configuration page shown in the link I gave you above, open a browser window and type in:

192.168.1.1

And hit return.

That's the default address for the router. It will ask you for a name/password. Unless something was changed, it should be:

Name: administrator

Pass: admin

Once in, look for a tab in the interface called "Advanced" Click on it. Then look for "Forwarding" or "Port Forwarding" or something to that affect. Click on that, then enter the info shown in those screenshots I directed you to earlier. Make sure to hit any "apply" or "OK" buttons afterward to make the settings stick.

Hope that helps. Post back if you have trouble.

Does it matter which computer I do it on?

No, it shouldn't. You should be able to get to the config page on any comp hooked up the router.

Hmmm, when I type that in it bring me to here. any more suggestions? Oh, and I typed it in in the browser.

Wow, weird! OK, do you know if you have a manual or any documentation that came with the router? As far as I know, that's the default IP address for the Linksys routers. Maybe something changed though. If you find documentation, it should have instructions in it for getting to that page. That's about all I can suggest. Sorry. :(

I am still lokking for that litle sheet, but do I have to put.com/.org or anything on there?

Ok, I am getting live support, so we will see how this goes.

Ok, found out what my problem was, I was typing in the default IP (192.168.1.1) instead of my IP, so it works now, thanks for the help OM. BTW, that online support comes in handy, nice people too.

Sounds like you got it solved, but just thought I'd add my 2˘.

Here's what I usually type in to get to those d@m*# pesky routers;

http://192.168.1

You might have typed the address in a yahoo search bar on your browser, or used http://www. 192.168.1 when you typed it in.

Also, most routers I've had he displeasure to screw around with only require;

Name: admin

Password: (leave blank)

Once inside, you can change the name and password to whatever you like.

U mean 192.168.0.1

For my dlink that is the routers private ip.

192.168.x.x are private ip's. Router address defaults vary...

Hmmm, right you are Bolo, router address defaults vary.

Yes, 192.169.x.x are private ip's, I guess that's why I decided to comment. Saw he was using 192.168.1.1 Just checked my router's doc's, and the address they gave was 192.168.0.1, but I still use 192.168.1 to get in. Both work.

Guess the best advice would be to consult your router's documentation. Unfortunately, if you have any kind of problem accessing the router, good luck. My dlink's doc's have 8 pages of instructions for PC's and (not kidding) 1/2 page for Macs.

My bad I meant to say 192.168.x.x

Not 192.169.x.x I must have been buzzed

Need 4 octets total

192.168.1 works because it sticks the 0 in automatically
