First rule that I had to learn the hard way: DO NOT open.psd files.
Look in The GUM (GIMP User Manual).
And yeah, it has an alpine learning curve (get snow chains), but then again, so does Photoshop. That's good, right?
Photo shop is so much easier...
On one tut they have its floating text. You do like 8 intermediate steps. While photoshop is just type it Layer>Layer Style> drop shadow

I have recently installed GIMP and have found it quite complicated for my 13 yr. Old mind. Plz give advice!
