Just crusing the channels last night and paused on C-Span to check out the no confidence vote roll-call vote taking place and it sounded like they were voting out the liberal party leaders.

Did I hear that right and...

Wazzup wi' dat???

I thought it was a liberal utopia up in the great, white North. Free meds, marry whoever and tolerate everyone ('cept thumpers) out the ying yang.

Surely I misunderstood.

Nice in-depth analysis, Rabban. I'm surprised we don't agree on more things.

Note: Not everyone in Canada spells like UFO COOL btw ^^ :)

Our country has been running on a minority gevernment for about 18 months. The 4 parties are about as follow:
40% Liberal: Centre (comparable to Democrats)
30% Conservative (Tories) Center Right (comparable to Rebublicans - well nothing quite compares to American Republicans!)
15% NDP (New Democratic Pary): Center Left
15% Bloc Quebecois: (Regional Party representing Quebec's interest and promoting sovereignty)

So like you can see the 2 smaller parties hold sway of the parliement. The leading Liberals need the lefties NDP to pass bills in Parliement. Any alliance of the Conservative can out-vote the Liberals. We even saw the Conservatives uniting with the Bloc to counter Liberal bills - which is the closest to cat-n-dog thingy.

It's actually been fun to see this minority governement. We're coming out of 3 majority government lead by the Liberals (since erly 90s baby) so it was nice to see such strong opposition! Alas much political tricks and games were on, and several bills stalled... The people here don't really want an election but the elected do want to get at it so....

It's been a very refreshing exercice in actual democracy! As opposed to our southern neighbors in their never-ending dual game of Democrats- Republican. To have 4 parties was awesome - a wider spectrum of idea is thus debated, the people hear concepts which often a centre-rulng governement won't dare to advance, etc.

I think, I hope anyway the next govt will also be a minority one...

Rabban: we're still a liberal utopia dude! XD However free meds are not universall and poligamy is not yet legal... And yes we do tolerate just about everyone. Here's a way to recognize a canadian in a crowd: kick him in the butt and he'll turn around and say 'excuse me I hope I did not hurt you' :P

@ Hugo. I long for a 3-4 party system here in the states. Will take much power out of the politicians and back to the people! ;)

For every position but President I vote for the third party candidate if available, hoping to someday have a 3 party system. If a third-party candidate is not running for the post, I'll vote against the incumbent.

Come on Rabbana! This is a serious thread about Canadian politics and now you're posting enticing pictures of you. How can we stay cool-headed for this academic discussion? Where's the coca?
