Hey guys recently my computer crashed because of a serious error in the system... It started like this... Last Saturday I was using the computer and everything was fine... Then my father came to use the computer, and I saw him downloading some things from the internet... Later when I use the computer again, it was not functioning properly... Before long, it restarted by itself. However it couldn restart and the following message appeared: A disk read error. Press ctrl+alt+del to restart So I pressed ctrl+alt+del and it did restart, but then the same message appeared again. Only after I tried several times did the following message appear: We are sorry for the inconvenience. Your computer might have experienced a serious problem due to a recent software or hardware...... Or if you are unsure of the problem..... Select Start Windows normally. So I selected Start Windows normally but it just came back to the same meesage that says a disk read error.
After several tries, I finally got the computer to start up. When I finally log into the computer, a Microsoft Windows appeared saying: Your computer has recovered from a serious error. and asked me if I wanted to send an error report to Microsoft company. I decided not to send but I checked the files that are going to be included in the error report. One file was called Mini081405-01.dmp while the other one was called sysdata.xml . I didn know what it was so I didn bother about it. I then went to surf the net. But not long after, the computer restarted again! This time I couldn log into the computer at all. Thus my father brought back the Windows XP system disk... And we finally managed to recover the system. Even though I am able to use the internet now, the computer is still unusually slow. My father has already deleted the things he downloaded and the computer is much better now. But I still suspect that the computer still has some problem. Can anyone help me identify whether this is a virus or a system error? And if it is a virus, what type of virus is it and how can I remove it? Thnx in advance :)

Do you have virus protection?if so you have the latest updates?
Are you sure you deleted all files your father downloaded?
were any of deleted files system files?
You running windowsXP?
Can you reinstall Windows Xp?
Did you blow a memory chip?
Have you checked out your System Device Manager in Control Panel?
If so any Questionmarks in a yellow circle? Next to your devices?

Since you are running XP then you can just get out your install CD, let it go thru it's whole thing and press R when you come to this:

Now type the number of which XP install you want to repair, probably 1.

You will need to enter the admin pass next.

Now type chkdsk [c:] and that will do a check disk on the drive to look for and fix errors. Once that finishes just type exit

OR if you can keep it running long enough, you can enable it as another boot option.

Insert your XP cd. Now open command prompt (Start, programs, accesories) and type (cd drive's letter here):i386winnt32 /cmdcons and say yes to the pop-up box. If succesful then click OK.

Reboot and select it! Do chkdsk steps!

PTT Kills back slashes, so type (cd drive's letter here):BACKSLASH i386BACKSLASH winnt32 /cmdcons

If you think it's a virus, then do a Virus Scan (You do have that, right?!), Ad-Aware , Spybot , hijackThis , CWShredder , and RegVac .

If it's not a hardware problem, and you have XP, just do a system restore. If you can get logged in long enough, just go to start -> programs -> accessories -> system tools -> system restore. Then choose to restore from a previous time. Just make sure that time is before the event occurred.

Of course, if any of the above happens to work, go right ahead with that.

Also, it might work better to do this in safe mode.

EDIT: Oh and if you use HijackThis, be sure you know what you're doing.

Get a mac... Cheaper, easier to use, not nearly as many viruses!

On a more helpful note: I am not sure, but this almost sounds like gator or wild tangent. Reinstalling shoul hav helped though 8o

Yeah macs are better by far. My advice is get a G4. Its not as expensive as a G5 but stil works great. Windows and stuff usually get the most viruses and problems. So even though a mac is more expensive Windows are usually the most expensive in the end. XD

Windows will beat out a Mac by far for one reason - SOFTWARE COMPATABILITY.
90% of the games on the market don't work with Mac's.

Mac's are not the prime target for virus's. They are as vournable as windows to them but are not targeted.

^ if there were more Macs used in the world then PCs there would be more viruses for Macs!

Get a mac... Cheaper

Not for $800+ it isn't!

Now I am not saying macs suck or anything, but....

LINUX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11111one

My defense system I use right now is AntiVir, XoftSpy, and Microsoft antispyware + microsoft firewall. I dont really get any viruses though because I never really visit many sites. Although, on occasion, ill be searching around then click on a website which contains viruses 8o AntiViruses I recommend AntiVir, Avast, or AVG free edition all found at download.com

Doesn't sound like WildTangent (I have it on my computer, just haven't got around to removing it since there's a couple games I play that use it). Might be Gator, or even 2ndThought. Blaster comes to mind, though.

Dont you guys watch CNN?!

Kami your computer has been infected with a new virus, I didnt catch the name, but it seems to be targeteting media companys and big buisinesses, although some regular people have caught it too

On CNN yesterday they caught a virus that told them to restart their computer, and the error was showing on the big map projection they have

They found out that after you successfully reboot your computer after many failed attempts your computer will say "your computer has recovered blah blah blah..." and continue to have random problems like the internet and restarting etc
but what is really not cool is that this virus after you get on it finally will have placed a backdoor into your computer for any remote access by the hacker/s who made the virus
that will explain the slowness of the computer because it is sending information back and forth over the internet thru this backdoor

I do not have any information on how to remove it but I am sure someone out there does know
I dont know if you might have removed the virus but the backdoor remianed.... Etc
so, it would be really nice for someone to finish up my comment with good tips for the locating and removal of these baddies

@ Warfare: Yeah I also heard of the new virus on the TV channels in Singapore... Seems to be hard to remove... It says that it may be spread through you email, Microsoft Outlook ... It also says even if you dun open the email with virus, the virus may already be in your computer once you receive the email... Hope someone can think of a way to remove it... BTW pls look out for the virus guys.... If you receive an email saying "You have failed to send an email " or something like that, it means the virus is already in your computer.... :(

My advice is screw windows...even though its good and all I have discovered a much more powerful OS. Just partition your hard drive and installed LINUX. Linux is much faster and more capable then windows. As far as software goes for LINUX. Theres alot...and the best part is that its all free...the OS , the software, Everything! You can make the Desktop look like anything, Windows Xp, Mac, and much more, right now I have my LInux looking like Mac. You guys should try it out its awesome

Windows beats mac by far. If there were more macs, macs would have viruses too. People target pc's because more people use them. Think about it most companies use pc's. Most people that do graphics use a pc. I think of it this way. Macs are for typing, pcs are for gaming and higher standards... Ooooo dis..... XD

@BB,

Right on!

I used a password to get McAfee virus scan and it gives you tons of options including...

-CREATE A RESCUE DISK

If your computer dosent turn on,pop in a rescue disk into the floppy drive to delete the virus causing the problem

NOTE:YOU MUST HAVE AN EMPTY FLOPPY DISK INSIDE YOUR FLOPPY DISK DRIVE SO THE SCANNER CAN TURN IT INTO A RESCUE DISK!

I totally agree
but a point made in another thread
if mac or linux or anything else was making up %70 of the computers in the world
then they would be the ones who would be slower, incompetent, crap.....
viruses aim for a certain audiance
if %70 of the world is using a mac, wouldent you use that to get what you want?

Why is linux more capable than windows?
sure it is built better, after people learned from microsoft
it isnt slow because you dont have to have patches and crap to fix your computer from the latest baddies out there
microsoft is just picked on, and beaten on
if someone would give microsoft a chance to stand up before beating it down again I think things would go smoother
I have found that windows runs quite well without ever being introduced to the internet

I agree with you WarFare...if you dont plan on having internet Windows is the best you can Get.....But as soon as you stick that meaningless little Ethernet Cord into your computer. It will never be the same again. Thats why I prefer linux now. Linux is basically Windows. Its just set up a little different and runs a lot smoother
