"Five games and five paychecks is substantial."
Yes, this will leave him with a measly $400k and some change to eke his way through the year. Poor fella'. Sounds as if this big teddy bear has quite a history of this type of action. Playing sports all my life, I get the heat of the moment lunacy thing, but you've gotta have an on/off switch in there somewhere. It seems that 99.5% of the rest of the league does. The president of the players' union was quoted as saying "I know this will be unpopular, but we are considering an appeal." Priceless.
That was probably the biggest cheap shot I've ever seen (and I've followed NFL since the 70's). I don't think it was a "heat of the moment" thing either. Haynesworth may have kicked Gurode in the head "in the heat of the moment", but to follow it up with cleats to the face took a decision. He chose to do that. There was some premeditation in that act.
So the center gets slashed, and Haynesworth loses some bucks. If I did that to someone, I'd probably be in the local slammer.
The NFL is making a big mistake. They need to send an uncompromising message that such behavior is 100% intolerable. The players union should be asking for a stronger penalty if they want to protect their members, too. They should be looking at this from Gurode's perspective, not Haynesworth's.
So Hanesworth got a record for suspension. So what. He should be given a ban for the remainder of the season at the least. His history shows he is a young man (child?) with a temper that needs to be controlled.
His coach could send the message that the NFL seems afraid to send, but he won't.
Yes LGM, I agree on the Marty McSorley-esque cheap shot. The heat of the moment lunacy I was referring to was the kick that knocked the helmet off. The on/off switch needs to occur sometime between that and the cleat stomp on the bare face.
All the "experts" on espn are calling for his removal from the league. Like that's gonna happen. New commish Goodell just handed him the "lengthiest suspension by games ever in the NFL.". A message being sent? Doubtful. While I'll agree that you, me, or anyone else that did that would be snugglin' with Bubba in the local hokey, this jackass will be back in six weeks at the most, if there's a bye week.
And an edit to the salary hit: apparently this season Haynesworth is supposed to earn $1.6 million, so that cost him $500k. Anybody feel like givin' up their spot in the govt cheese line for him yet?

Anybody see this ? It's been all over the news. I searched but couldn't find a video...
I think the 5-game suspension isn't punishment enough. 38k per game plus a potential max fine of 50k is nothing. Didn't Mike Tyson get banned from boxing for biting Holyfield's ear? This was an even more vicious attack, IMO. He should be banned from football and have criminal charges against him.
