Page : <1> :

Hey all,

I'm trying to get my folks to set up a 24/7 dedicated TT server, but my dad said that Comcast does not allow you to run any kind of server or have anyone else connect to you outside of your own home network. Now I have hosted dedicated servers in the past and I have had no problems with them, and I know others host with Comcast. So, what should I do?

Thanks folks.

Hey Racer,

I have comcast, and have no problem hosting. I don't usually keep mine up 24/7, but that is not because of comcast. I am not aware that this is against any policy. Just be sure you have a router set up with port forwarding and you should be all set.

I read this somewhere:

They care more about bandwidth than what their users are doing. If you use up a ton of bandwidth then they will most likely flag you and suspend your account.

And from their policy:

You may not run programs, equipment, or servers from the Premises that provide network content or any other services to anyone outside of your Premises LAN (Local Area Network), also commonly referred to as public services or servers. Examples of prohibited services and servers include, but are not limited to, e-mail, Web hosting, file sharing, and proxy services and servers;

I'm not sure what to do.

^ Oh - forgot to mention that I would highly recommend that you use the Blue-Link® Module for extra performance. XD ;)

^ The one that you don't have.

So, what should I do, and what to tell my dad?

They are concerned about you uploading and downloading a lot of content which would take up lots of bandwidth. They have policies like that to protect themselves from potential abuse of the system. I think there is no cause for concern here.

I don't think TT sucks up that much bandwith! I'll go ask again.

Alright! I'm SO close to convincing them into letting me run a server! My dad is still concered with the bandwidth stuff. But less. Anything more?

The only thing that I can think of that might take a bit more bandwith than usual would be to completely dounload those maps like MM's and stuff, but there's the option to zip them directly, so that shouldn't be a problem :)

The connection itself shouldn't take much bandwith I don't think B)

Nah I'll only be hosting Stock TT maps.

What should I tell them after I ask?

You will be sharing your connection with your dad, so I would be concerned that whenever he sends a big e-mail or downloads something, it will affect your TT server. But your server should not interfere with his normal business IMO.

Tell your dad that TT works by sending small packets of data very quickly, but does NOT involve the transfer of large files. So it is completely within the intent of the Comcast policy.

^ The only thing I am concerned about is when my dad does P2P File Sharing every now and then. I will just take the server down at that point. And he does it very rarely.

YAY! He is letting me host the server! Now I just need to get my dad to set up an old PC to run the server!

Wednesday, May 25, 2005 at 12:45:28 AM

AW he won't let me host it 24/7.

I run almost 24/7 with comcast and have never had a problem with them.

4/1/1929 to 11/17/2006 Rest in Peace Bo. GO BLUE!!!
