Who had the brilliant marketing concept of truncating and misspelling the names of new products and services???!!
The first culprit was the online photo service FlickR ...

Now there is the red hot new phone called RazR !

And its many mutant variant cousins...
The Motorola PEBL

The ROKR which was the first phone to play iTunes but did not do it well.

The MotoSlvR is the new model that plays itunes.

Oh here's the Pink RazR for Magenta... Heh heh...

Looking at the positive side of this hot new trend I have to admit that it's certainly better than the old naming conventions for products, such as the cryptic The Nokia 6102! Talk about dull and difficult to remember! Still, would it kill them to spell words correctly? Is it THAT cute to drop letters??

It makes sense in the cell phone market, seeing how letters get frequently dropped by the text messaging crowd. Obviously the marketers are appealing to the vocabulary of their young fashion conscience customers. Seems like a smart move, even if it offends our vowel minded sensitivities.

As for Flickr, my guess is that http://www.flicker.com was already taken...

Mh, wh nds vwls nywy?

Personally I hate the 'txt' language and most 'internet' abbreviations. There are a few I use, but mostly only as jargon or in place of emoticons. I'm a fast typer (on a decent keyboard and typing 'you too' takes no longer than 'U2', likewise with 'cu l8r' and 'see you later' and I believe it's much nicer to read/recieve the latter. With text messages being so cheap to send and most mobile phones supporting long messages - or breaking them into multiple messages automatically, the excuse for the 'txt' language is fast diminishing, and it's biggest advocates seem to be those that can't actually spell properly anyway.

It is of course completely different here in china where every word is only 1-3 characters long.. Far longer text messages can be sent in far fewer characters.

As for companies trying to be 'trendy' and appeal to the younger market by using names like 'PEBL', all I can say is 'urghhh'. I can't stand it, and it puts me off the product.

-Z- (with the abbreviated nick ;) hehe)

P.S. Why is abbreviated such a long word?

Because people can abbreviate it as "abbv.". I guess...
Anyways, I talk in shorthand sometimes in TT because... Well, it's fast-paced, and my keyboard there isn't very sensitive. But if I'm taking a break on PTT, I can type in full-hand (just try and prove me wrong XD ) at... Hmm, a solid 50WPM.
Want a typing speed like that? Try this (Linux users only):
1. Stop using the Start menu/X/K/Ubuntu/G/whatever button.
2. Disable icons from showing on your desktop.
3. Take up writing Python scripts.
4. Don't use the clipboard.
5. Do everything in Terminal. XD
I know it's a PITA, but it works. %) XO :o X/ :'( 8o B)

Or - just buy yourself a 'Natural' keyboard... Takes a week or so to get used to the split key layout, but you'll find that you automatically and instinctively begin to touch type due to the natural position that your hands fall over the keyboard. It practically doubled my typing speed after a month of having my first one.

I full heartly agree with that, thought, I hate them all. I only use them when I'm joking or just generally fooling. Perhaps, I have found a long lost brother? :)

I remember once playing a game called X. I had met a certain guy, let's call him 1337Guy, several times before and had talked about things concerning the game with him. Well, one shiny day I greeted him via chat. We passed few words... Then it happened. He requested me to talk him in leet speak as it were cool(huh, cool?). I thought, what on the ninth hell... But I shrugged and decided why not as I found that nifty leet speak translator few days ago. Thus I always first typed my message to the translator and then gave it to him...

You don't have to let go of one rope before grabbing the other. But you'll have to let go of one if you want to swing forward.
