HI , if any body find this interesting ,just let me know.

However, then from where did undertake term "tank", that in the translation from the English "tank" or "vat"? The fact is that the Englishmen constructed them with the observance of the strictest secrecy, understanding, that their only sudden appearance in the battlefield guarantees success. With the transportation by railroad the machines closed with tarpaulin from a distance resembled large metallic cisterns, and then they released rumor, that these are the tanks, built to order of Russian government. On them they wrote in Russian "carefully. Petrograd ". After this, the term "tank" was inculcated in the Russian and Englishes, whereas in the German army after it another name was fastened - "pantserkampfvagen" (combat armored vehicle) or is simple "Panzer", in the abbreviation - Pz Kpfw or Pz. In Frenchmen - "sphere de Combat" (combat vehicle), on the jargon of servicemen it is simple "sphere". Italians used term "karro d'armato" (armed vehicle), Swedes - "stridsvagn" (combat vehicle), Poles - "cholg" (gusenitsa).V the First World War Englishmen made in essence heavy
Fighting weight Mk 1 was 28 t (27 t in "female"), speed - 4,5 km/h (in the locality - 2 km/h), the radius of action - 19 km armor protection reached 5-11 mm, armament consisted of two 57- mm of guns and three machine guns "gochkiss" (on the "male") or 5 machine guns (on the "female"), established in sponsonakh. Crew - 8 people. For the driver and the commander in the forward section of the housing was a room. On the roof of tank they stretched grid - neglected by enemy hand grenades were rolled up on it and exploded on the earth. In all there were 150 mkI, equally "males" and "the samok".Poyavivshiyesya in the beginning of 1917 Of m.kII and M.kIII (on 50 units) did not have tailed wheels and antigrenade screens, into the construction of hatchways and observation slits introduced the changes, on M.kIII by the places for utolshchili armor and enlarged each sixth of trak.Za by them it followed M.kIV, order for which gave out on 19 September, 1916, immediately after battle on Somme. The interference of prime minister was required, since army staff abolished order for 1200 M.kIV (405 "males", 205 machines of supply, remaining "females"). The improvements, dictated by the combat experience, introduced into the device of tank: the thickness of armor in the frontal part increased from 12 to 16 mm, on the boards - c 6 to 12 mm, and on the roof they brought to 8 mm, which considerably increased the crew safety.
Sponson could be slid inside the housing on the sleds (access ramps), which facilitated transport. But sometimes in combat, with the large bank, sponsony tore away catchs and, suddenly slipping down into the tank, they mutilated people. On the "females" of sponsony of umen'shili.Na Of m.kIV for the first time established light machine guns "Lewis" that it was error, since it required increase in the embrasures. In the machines of late models they removed this deficiency, after replacing "Lewises" with tank machine guns "gochkiss" and after using guns with the stem, shortened from 40 to 23 calibers, which were not set into the earth with the bank and they did not catch trees and walls domov.Toplivnye tanks now placed out of the housing, between the rear branches of caterpillars, the fuel to the engines was given forcedly, the muffler was placed on the exhaust pipe. Chain transmission to the driven wheels they covered from mud, caterpillars made more widely. They improved the inspection device of driver, which protected him now from the lead drops with the entries of bullets - it was the armor perforated tape.

That tank was in WWI it was one of the very first tanks I'm not quite sure if it was retired becuase of it being slow or it guzzled too much gas but something like that it could move over almost any obstacle I'm not sure if this is all correct but this is only what I know

West German periodical "zol'dat of und technician" during December 1965 published the editorial article, dedicated to the 25- anniversary of Soviet tank T -34, in which it was said: "during June 1940 descended from the conveyor the first series Soviet tank T -34. This tank unquestionably was authentic masterpiece in the history of development of military technology. In it the technical elements of high-speed cruiser tank with the high invulnerability, inherent in the tank of the direct support of infantry, successfully were combined. Appearance T -34 at the eastern front in the summer of 1941 was unexpected contingency for the German troops. According to its technical characteristics T -34 it considerably exceeded the foreign models of the tanks of that time. For the first time medium tank was armed by long-barrelled 76- millimeter gun. Its projectiles possessed the higher initial velocity than the projectiles of any foreign tank gun of the caliber of 75-76 millimeters. Completely new was the form of the tower, the large angles of the slope of armor of which increased the invulnerability of tank. The foreign tanks of the 30th it is annual they had gasoline engines. Tank T -34 and its contemporary heavy tank KV were equipped with the Diesel engines, which considerably increased the radius of action of machine and decreased the danger in fire sense. One should recall that the largest western countries approached the production of special tank Diesel engines only at the end of the 50th - beginning of the 60th it was annual. From the German tank T -.III Soviet tank T -34 differ significantly in terms of high mobility and passability. Furthermore, the radius of its action was several times more, and armament and armor absolutely exceeded German. The 37- millimeter gun of tank T -.III did not present danger for the armor T -34, while 76 millimeter gun T -34 on all distances penetrated 30- millimeter armor of tank T -.III.Kinetic energy of the projectile of gun T 34 was 7,6 times more than in the projectile of the gun of tank T -.III. Still more than T -34 exceeded according to its combat characteristics the tank T -.IV, whose short-barreled 75- millimeter gun did not befit for dealing with T -34. During World War II, apparently, were produced about 40 thousand tanks T -34. This avalanche was brought down against our eastern front, which resisted it for three years, but finally forced it was to collapse under its strong pressure ".

The last documetary I saw on the T-34 gave me this bit that I can't forget: It was designed expressly for defense agianst Germany. It was done expertly, and quickly under the most dire circumstances, when Russia was on the edge of collaps under the German onslaught. As was stated before T-34, t his tank was virtually indestructable for Hitler's ground force. I actually saw this in action on film. It showed SEVERAL T-34s coming down a road w/the first emerging through some bushy entrance(perhaps a farmhouse gate). In the foreground were assembled German troops firing upon it with anti-tank shells(bazooka) with only a short flash w/smoke only glancing off of it's front face. The T-34 never skipped a beat. In the same istant, the German troops took off away from camera sight. The End.

The T-34 was a great tank...no question. But, the next generation T-44 was the greatest tank ever.

Thanks for the history T-34. I had no idea you were Ukranian. Think Tanks is truly a world wide game. By the way, I enjoy playing team scrum with you.

Chuck

PS. Are tanks a hobby or a profession for you? You seem awfully knowlegable.

Super T,

But the tiger was a better tank than the t-34, but it was a heavy compared to a medium the t-34. Some german commander one Tiger, knocked out 22 t-34 in a group of 50... The rest retreated, he ran out of ammo. They didn't know that.

But to prove that the t-34 was the first best and finest for a good time is easy; the germans always used captured T-34 in regular army they loved it (also had nothing to beat it for 1-2 years ) and copied the t-34.

Outright copy and later developped the panther, which incorparates much of the advances of the t-34, firepower, great defense, (sloped armour) , maneuvrability, speed and great range of action. So I will put up my panther any day against your t-34. I've been practicing my BM skills... Was a bit weak there.

Something else interesting Apples Operating Systems... Jaguar, panther and now TIGER, not wimpy names like.... Windows! :) Guess what drives my computer? ;)

Don't know much about history, but T-34 is right. As I understand it there are several MkIV tanks. The most famous is the original tank, the British MkIV of WWI, as seen more or less in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Came in femaie and male versions. I kid you not. The MkIV Male may be the most famous tank of all time - - had side guns (the female didn't). In British parlance, Mk is pronounced Mark (and means model or make), viz the Spitfire MkVII or the Jaguar MkII.

In WWII the German panzers were the MkIII and the MKIV. The MkIV was not as fierce as the famous Tiger, but was produced in larger numbers and was the key tank of the blitzkrieg, North Africa, and Europe. The T-34 could often beat it in battle (please note). It may be the quintessential tank, unsung but fearsome. It is the tank I use in the best indie scrum games.

I think the Brits have a modern Challenger-class tank also called a MkIV. Not much to look at, so-so performance, and tends to lose in NATO war games, but all glory fades in time. This is the tank I use in team games against RX and you other super-pros.

MkIV
