I just read a news item about the Marines cleaning up Sri Lanka after the horrific Tsunami disaster
and wondered how many other tough jobs there are out there. Not many can be worse than that one!
To hear a Marine talk about how he almost cried when he gave a photo album he found to a woman who was the sole survivor of the Tsunami was a jolt. What other jobs do you think are extremely tough on an emotional level?
I think being a coroner or medical examiner would be rough. So would working in the ER or being a paramedic or firefighter or policeman.
They all see death and violence in its many forms. I've heard doctors explain how they learn to distance themselves emotionally in order to get the job done. Policemen have said the same thing. You almost have to learn to be inhuman and robotic if you are to be any good at doing these jobs (but then you need to develop good bedside manner if you are a doctor).
Working in prisons/jails can't be a day in the park. I just thought of a really depressing place to work, the DMV (Department of Motor Veheciles)!
Just kidding, kind of. Something sad about the atmosphere surrounding government workers. Everything seems to move in ultra slo-mo too.
