In the year 2085 all the world problems have been quelled by the establishment of huge corporations which control the world's resources. The worldwide masses are pacified and violence is outlawed across the globe. In order to stem violent behaviour the corporations needed a way for violence and aggression to be diverted away from everyday life, so they created the ultra-violent game of RollerBall and thus organised the RollerBall World Series. This strategic game. In which players are frequently killed, is a combination of military war games, motor racing, rally cross, and gladiatorial combat. The creation of RollerBall by the corporations was a masterstroke in uniting the world and channelling violence and aggression in one direction, that of the opposing RollerBall team.

RollerBall is a completely new gametype developed by Dazzle and Canned Splam. It has taken over 7 months to create and test all the aspects of RollerBall and we hope you will enjoy the gameplay together with the visual aspects of our game. RollerBall uses hardly any standard ThinkTanks objects, sounds, etc - so in order for you to play RollerBall you will need to download and install the RollerBall preload. Inside this preload are all the files you will need to play the game together with detailed instructions (for PC and mac) on how to install the files onto your computer and a guide on how to actually play RollerBall, plus some custom RollerBall TT background skins.

Comment from Canned Splam

It was a lot of hard work, Dazzle and I are crying right now. It was about one year ago that I got an email for dazzle. At first I thought he was a crazy UK looney. But I accepted, with no intention of every scripting "RollerBall." And now, today, we are actualy releasing it! It is sooo much more than I ever dreamed. I would right a whole big story but I'm too excited, I just wanna play!!!!!

Comment from Dazzle (UF)

Well it was an ambitious project from the start, and if I'd known what we were starting I would probably not have... But we tackled this project head on and developed the game from a fairly simple idea into something that we are both extremely proud of. Along the road I have had to learn many new skills including 3D moddelling and animation - very interesting but at some points I could have smashed the screen, lmao. Oh and if I see a special.cs again I am gonna go mental. But to be honest although some parts were extremely frustrating on the whole I have loved making this game and I really hope you guys in TT land enjoy it as much as we have making it. And to my partner Mr Canned Splam I would like to say a huge thanks as this thing would not exist with him, he is the one who brought RollerBall to life.

Do you like it, is it fun, it it tactical, is it intense? What about the maps - which one is your favorite, which offers the best game, which is the most creative etc etc - Instead of the constant complaints, which I add are not criticisms.

I like it just fine. I'm sorry to say that I've only played a few games with 3 or 4 people in game, and those did get intense. I like Houston best, but that's because there is more than one way to approach the goal. Most of them have a straight shot over a ramp to the goal (actually, that's two ways, one in each direction). The Houston map has another direction of approach, too. It makes it a bit more interesting.

When playing, I notice that if not many players are in, the bigger maps end up being a chase game. Whoever has an active goal has the advantage, and it's hard to chase down the ball carrier with few players. I think that's why I favor the smaller maps.

I'm looking forward to seeing more players, because I don't think the game has even shown what it can be yet. With 3-4 on a side, this could get very intense. Not so intense 1 on 1 or 1 on 2.

On another topic, everytime I'm in RB servers, people join, then get the boot because they don't preload.
Preload the parts, people! Don't waste your time trying to join without it!

As far as lag, I'm in WA state, and the Brit server isn't all that bad for me. I haven't been able to find the other ones yet.

^ I love you
@ ice: Will you marry me?

Thankyou thats exactly what I wanted to hear.

Dazzle, who is almost never angry.... He is a grown mild mannered man.... Needs quiet a lot to be as pissed as he is now.

The fact is, every since before anyone played rollerball, they were complaining about lag. Before they even started to play. Its always been out there that it can be laggy. I have a decent machine...

GeForce FX 5200:

Chipset Model:GeForce FX 5200
Type:Display
Bus:AGP
Slot:AGP
VRAM (Total):64 MB
Vendor:nVIDIA (0x10de)

1.8Ghz PowerPC single Processor

Compared to some other gamers, this is pretty decent. Some people are pretty set up.

One point dazzle made that I totaly agree with is, most people who are complaining about lag in our server, do so in very respected servers. Player, I have seen you complain about lag in places like Dashbash when I had none.

And on top of that I have no problem with dazzles server, or any rollerball server. I live in california, far from roo and dazzle, and I have no problems. What tweaks me, is when people l do load up the server, they say everything is amazing, but they whine about... You guessed it, LAG.

Okay so what all that in mind, Player is right, like always, and dazzle and cs are rude sarcastic numbskulls.... Like always

I hope you guys weren't taking my in-game comments on lag as negative critisism, I was just stating the obvious. I blame my computer, and am bummed that I can't fully enjoy the new gametype.

Friday, September 22, 2006 at 9:22:17 AM

In my opinion, yes there will be more lag in the servers than others. Why? In most servers, when people complain about lag they are complaining about NETWORK LAG. This happens when the network strain gets high from players on poor connections, etc, and causes a burp in the server connection. (some network dude correct me on this please) The burp will usually go away unless you are on dial up. (as jedi found out the other day ;) )

In rollerball I think they are complaining about hardware lag. Even though you say it has the same number of objects, they are much more complex. Since you combined a lot of them together, it is going to make the objects more complex, and be more strain on the pc. And in the map with the snow emitter it is more laggy than the rest, because of the dense emitters. Love the map though, and it's my favorite.

I have a pretty good pc myself, and it runs rollerball quite nicely. However on one of my spare PCs, which is a PIII 450mhz with 384mb ram and a geforce 2, it runs rollerball at about 5fps, but runs normal maps (stock maps, dash maps) at around 40fps.

People should face the facts, you need a good pc to play in rollerball, heck you should have a good pc to play ANY online game. But some people don't have the money or skills to upgrade their graphics card, etc. As for network lag, as long as you have a good connection like dsl or cable, you should have no network lag problems at all.

Personally I think you are all taking this too seriously. Please let's let it go and have some nice games. Even if you have lag, deal with it. I officially refuse to argue any more on this topic.

^ Probably the next person Splam will propose to ;)

Racer's got the right idea. I'm playing on an eMac (sorry Racer), and that goes fine. I wouldn't want to try it with my 6 year old iBook. The graphic card barely handles stock maps.

I think the discussion about lag needs to end. If you can't make an upgrade to your hardware, unfortunately the game may be unsatisfactory. It's not Dazzle's or CannedSplam's fault.

They worked their butts off to make this thing, and I'll have to cheer for the effort.

^ I agree, they did really well with this. Sweet objects, cool gameplay, and really cool sounds. :) (^, nice pic) ;)

I have experienced lag when I play, however I have yet to play in roo's server. It's really fun even with lag... I normally never see anyone in there though...

P.S. CS and Daz did great on this, they do deserve some congratsulating!(sp?) ;)

Pass the popcorn...

Woohoo - 100% on the money racer

Thanks to ^ and ^^ and ^^^ for the comments, its positive posts like this that will drive me to make a set of series 2 maps, look out hehe XD

OK Daz, I am going to get off my fat arse and install the updates for Rollerball and come and play. I just got my new machine today, so I will get it all loaded and go play.

I've got a fever, and the only prescription, is more cowbell.

Friday, September 22, 2006 at 11:24:21 AM

Nice one smacky, also just noticed that Roo's RollerBall server is running right now !!! WOOT XD (bows down to Roo - thanks man.....)

Friday, September 22, 2006 at 12:06:14 PM

Don't want my comments to be taken as negative. Definately hardware lag that was slowing me down (can't speak for others).

I was thinking, is it possible for the server to check on players hardware lag in the same way it can for network lag (ping)? And if so, could you create a script to change peoples graphics settings accordingly.

I know I always play all the stock maps with high settings, or they look naff otherwise; but in rollerball for some reason I see no difference when I lower the details, and I reckon this is what people are failing to do...

Go into a server
computer has heartattack
quit server

...rather than changing settings and trying again. It plays fine on my stock eMac when the settings are lowered.

Friday, September 22, 2006 at 12:08:24 PM

^ Man, roo's server is great! I get great gameplay there, nice server roo! ;)

Another map series eh? Can't wait. :)

Pass the popcorn...

Friday, September 22, 2006 at 12:08:29 PM

Same here bloop.

Currently hardware lag is impossible to check, unless you could write a command that checked specs, and warned people when entering that gameplay might not be as good because of computer specs. It could look for certain hardware stuff, mainly video card type, video card ram, and cpu speed. For example, if someone came in with a PC that had a cpu speed of less than... Say 1.2ghz, and had a nvidia geforce 2 with 16mb ram, it would warn them with something like "Your computer is lower than the minimum specs, gameplay might not be as smooth."

Friday, September 22, 2006 at 12:18:33 PM

It's a fun game and I enjoy it. I was giving suggestions when you guys asked for them. But apparently that was a bad idea. Oh well.

I love all of you!

Actualy, if the people who have iffy computers want to download a script file Im working on, this will allow me to regulate certain things for them client side on the rollerball servers... Making thier gameplay more enjoyable.

Friday, September 22, 2006 at 3:29:27 PM

I downloaded the files and put them in the right places but the game wont load. I double checked the intructions. I really want to play!

Lookin out for a new army.

Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 9:18:25 AM

^^ Cool, I think thay would help a lot! What exactly would it regulate?

Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 9:19:51 AM

^ Like you really care, jeez go away.

^^ next time the UK server is up if I see you join then I can tell you what you have done wrong.

I do care; this is the script that I had wanted to see. Maybe you should read the last few posts I made in this thread ;)

Saturday, September 23, 2006 at 5:04:45 PM

After much deliberation, I will be starting on the next series of 4 RollerBall Maps.

This time I will be making maps for London, New York, and Sydney, however I need one more and have not quite decided on what it should be, so far I am thinking Rome or maybe Toronto.

Any other suggestions?

Even though the new maps won't be out for a considerable amount of time...Good Luck! B)

Tuesday, October 03, 2006 at 5:48:46 AM

Did someone say new maps? XD

I'd love to see some new maps out there, more action to be done. Don't get me wrong though, the work you two have put in so far is extraordinary, with a great outcome. I wouldn't be disappointed if you guys left it as-is, because Rollerball is great the way it is. However, I know Dazzle isn't that way, and CS won't be able to stop once it's started, so good luck to both of you. ;)

Tuesday, October 03, 2006 at 2:33:23 PM

Well I noticed some problems in-game, but from what it was... I'm quite sure they were the comp (my mom's, lol). But from what I could get- it's pretty great. =) I look forward to playing it on a better machine.

Ok, so people have been complaining about lag. Erm, WHAT LAG? I have a pretty low-spec Windows XP, and I get perfectly good gameplay. I started on the Snow one, which is the WORST on lag, and haven't had a thing. Of course I was playing on my own. But still, people need to face the music. If you've got a ^( PC/Mac/Linux, of course you're going to lag, and my advice is UPGRADE THE PC . RollerBall is out of this world. And I think it should urge people to upgrade so they can enjoy every thrill of it.

Although I have one question, can someone teach me how to play RollerBall?

Leeds EDIT: On Tokyo, my bloomin hardware got overloaded, probably due to MSN Messenger being active at same time. I think it has SOMETHING to do with the volcano eruption script in Frantic (Tokyo) that causes it. Just my thought. I'll see if I can play the others lag free. If I can't, I'll look on CCL for some new parts.
