Here it is: Every time the master server goes down, the overall lag increases. If you go on servers now, they are laggier than they were before. Most of the time its not very noticable, but I believe it that everything lags just a little bit more each time the server goes down.

I encourage you all to go out and see if this is true. Maybe its just my computer/internet connection, but I don't think so.

Not likely...
The master server is merely a list of servers... After you pick and join one, you are no longer connected to the master server, therefore if the master is lagging, it does not affect the target server.

However.... The target server does send packets out to the master server to show it is alive... Dubbed "Heartbeats" by GG
If the master is laggy the packets might be behind as well... But these heartbeats are only every few minutes or so... So lag from them could happen but unlikely as well

@Warfare: True, it is unlikely that it would do much, but look at it this way:

As you stated, the master server could cause a little bit of lag. Now, this little bit of lag wouldn't do much at first. But over time, those little bits of extra lag add up, and create the lag we have today.

Now, from what I've heard, when TT first came out, there was very little lag. But over time, the lag has increased. Now, IMO, the probable thing is that each time the master server went down (meaning it crashed due to lag), when it came back up, there was a little more lag each time.

Now obviously there's no way to prove this except to wait over time. I've been playing TT now for 9 months, and I can say that the lag has incresed a good bit in that time. And I remember the master server crashing 3 major times during that period, not counting the smaller events of a few hours.

So I say to any who don't believe this, prove me wrong.

LGM

I can't prove it, Jedi, but I think it's an effect of more traffic on the Internet. More and more people are using those cable connections, and they don't realize that the neighborhood is its own subnet. More people downloading stuff, more traffic, less space for your TT packets to go back and forth without delay.

I dont know.... I never have had a problem with lag except when it is raining... Verizon sucks...
But I also have a T1 connection...
From my point of view, if something is lagging, it's not me
