The price of protien goes through a very regular and consistent cycle. (Look into Cattle economics)

There is also the effect of summer barbequeing. More demand = higher prices.

Just remember when picking out protien, if it's green its cheap. (little bit of gas production helps as well.

If we were more socially responsible we would be looking into more alternative protein sources. But the scumbag lobbists keep stopping it from getting through congress. Friggin' AARP...

^Why not? Flea's like all sorts of mammals. They eat whatever presents itself. (You plague carrier you)

Beef is at an alltime high. Pork is still cheap. Overall the reason for the prices (besides gas) is that we are cutting back (or closing) the sale on meat from other countries because of the bird flu and mad cow crap. We have to pay more for our own stuff just like every other market because of our high wages.

Also animal food producers use less and less of the meat byproducts in their stuff. As they use more and more human grade meat, the supply decreases and the demand and price increases.

Believe me, the gov knows exactly what it is doing here. Making themselves more $ as usual.

Is this about natural protein sources or supplements? :o

You don't have to let go of one rope before grabbing the other. But you'll have to let go of one if you want to swing forward.

It's weird to use the word 'protein' when in fact you mean 'meat'.

Saturday, May 13, 2006 at 1:31:07 PM

Indeed mostly meat on the hoof. But also fish, eggs, milk, cheese and... Lipish floor sweepings :)

I wanted some parmesan the other day while at Safeway. I picked up a chunk (I like grating it myself) and the price was like $17 a pound. Screw that, went later to the local Kroger to finish shopping where it was "only" like $9 a pound. Gah. If milk wasn't subsidized it would probably be $7 a gallon. I'm glad I like the vegetarian chile with the TVP :)

It's all gone up a bunch.

Edit: just realized that maybe I look at meals a bit different Brainz. When planning meals I really do think in vegetable, carb, fat, and protein terms and how much of each I'm proportioning. Is that weird?

No, it's wise. You can figure out how much p/c/f you have consumed that day. With them you can figure out how much calories you have got. From calories you see if your weight drops, goes up or keeps the same level. I haven't never counted vegs nor fruits. Just (try to) add some of them to all servings.

Here in IL the smart folk dont buy meat from the grocery stores. We buy direct from the farmers. I just bought a half a hog the other day for less than a dollar per pound.

@ Hugo,

It took me a while to understand the purpose of the thread.... People use some funny terms to describe what is simply known as meat.

BTW 'Weird' was a poor choice of word. :)

Well I think we're just seeing inflation. I don't know how old you are FleaMeatBiscuit ( ;) ) but I'm sure you've seen prices raise for ever now. Slowly, sometimes faster. I was born in the 70s and at that time $1.00 could get you something. Pennies still had a significance. Now everything is off the roof. Plus I'm trying to buy organic as much as I can; thus I bleed.

@ Bolo: good call. Perhaps it will be more like that soon with the pressure of rising prices. Like the good olden days that we like to imagine....

Bolo beat me to the whole hog suggestion. I'll up him one and suggest venison. Do you know deer hits cost us billions of dollars a year? Save a car, eat venison. My sister from Wisconson guts her own deer in her garage prior to taking it to a meat processor. Just be ready for sparks when you cook it in the microwave. ;)

Actually soy is on the rise. Feeding animals all vegetable protein (usually soybean meal) is causing the demand for soy to increase. Beef is expensive and pork is cheap....find some friends to all go in to a locker and split a cow. About 300 bucks for a quarter of beef round here.

^your comments above just brought back a fond memory

My Grandfather who just passed away a month ago kind of confused a lot of people. He was a large animal vetrinarian that made different types of meat as a hobby. :S This confused people because they always thought that he became a vet because of a love of animals?? My personally theory was he became a vet to get to know more about his favorite subject... Food on the hoof. XD

He had his own walk-in cooler and freezer, commerical smoker, bandsaws, grinders, and suasage presses in one of the outbuildings on his ranch in Montana. I grew up on the ranch helping my grandpa cutting meat from the time I was 5 or so. We did hogs, sheep, steers, deer, rabbits, elk, phesants, duck, geese, and a moose or two (he was also an avid hunter).

And ohh was it good (quadruple bi-pass for my grandpa good). XD The old coot still lived to be 89 and enjoyed getting there.

Kind of off topic but fresh in my memory.
