I have a digital camera which records in mpeg-4 format... When it appears in my computer (mac) it has the.avi suffix.

I want to be able to edit it in I-movie (runs off quicktime) but it doesn't recognise the file... It plays the sound but not the film. However it does run fine in vlc.

Apparently I need a 'codec', but when I try to play it with this codec installed it is no better.. Now it has a black screen with green squares jittering about (was a plain white screen before).

The codec is "3ivx d4"

Are their any other codec's I can use. Or any other editing programs which I can edit with which recognise.avi/mpeg-4. Or anything else I can try?

A clueless pablo

You could use Flip4Mac to convert it to another format.

Information here - http://www.flip4mac.com/

I don't know if I'm being stupid... But I can't get it to work. This flip4mac thing just brings up the same white screen

...does that not mean it should work anyway?

Im confused

Yo. Try mpeg streamclip . You should be able to export to dv and play into iMovie without a problem. I haven't used this in a while due to the very cool but over priced elgato converter I bought a couple years ago. This should well for you though, I have used in in the past with success. G'luck!
