From the 11/5/04 edition of the GarageGames Developer Newsletter:

An awesome little developer sidenote, the singleplayer racing game dRacer, by BraveTree Productions and built on the Torque Game Engine, was being showcased on only Windows PCs, but when the team saw the dual G5s with 23inch cinema screen displays, they knew they would have to port the game over to Mac. So, Friday night during IGC, over the space of two hours, the game was ported over to OSX and was running on all the dual G5s the next morning. Now what other robust 3D engine allows such easy crossplatform porting?

Racer, an exciting arcade racing game from BraveTree Productions, blew by the rest of the games and won the 2004 IGC Players Choice Best Singleplayer game.

Woooot!

I played this game at IGC, it's pretty sweet. It was still in development so what they did was set up a server that recorded your laps. Then when you finished a lap it would spawn a ghost car that was your own car the last lap. So you would race against yourself. If you beat the ghost then the next lap you would be racing against the ghost from you winning lap so you were always tring to beat your own best lap. It was suprisingly fun. It handles really well and plays like an arcady grand tourismo.

Cool. Can't wait to give it a spin!

Sounds like this won't be a multi-player game if I'm reading it right.

OOOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I WANNA PLAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think it will have multiplayer support actually, the Ghost I described was just a temporary game mechanic for the demo at IGC. I believe it was actually controlled by a server though, they had a competition where the best ghost was uploaded to a central server and then everyone raced against it to see who could set the best lap time. I think the only reason they didn't have straight up multiplayer was because they haven't coded the collision system between cars.

It's been a long while since I did an update, so I thought it was about time. I've been very busy with the new game, creating content, developing, and doing general games stuff. I'm working with BraveTree Productions, LLC. In Eugene, Oregon on a racing game. The idea came about when I developed a technology to simplify the creation of a racing surface. From that, many hours have been devoted to create a very customizable race track component. Clark Fagot, lead developer at BraveTree, has worked extremely hard on creating a driving model that works awesome. Joe Maruschak is the artist and ideas guy... It amazes me how many good ideas Joe has. He really knows what makes things good or bad, and what should be included or tossed out.

We're now into our fourth month of development and the framework is almost complete. Soon we'll be able to start on the game in earnest. I'm working on the track editor, which will be released with the game. It's a fully 3D world editor with tools specifically designed to simplify track creation. It's amazing to me how much it has changed from its initial revision. It's getting to the point where we can whip out a track in a couple of minutes and then race it. Soon we'll be adding the ability to place signs, buildings, trees, and other scenery. Keep your eyes peeled for upcoming announcements! Also, check out the screenshots page for some piccys of the game in progress. I swear I'll try to keep up on this page!!

Good things are happening to dRacer. We're pushing forward with it -- I'm working hard on the editor and cleaning up track rendering code. Soon, full fledged development will begin to get dRacer to market.. Here's to a great success!

Yowzer! Sweet little movie RX! Dang that looks awesome. I was just as impressed with how easy it looked to create a track as the driving sequences themselves.

Though there are some good racing games now coming out for the Mac, most of them practically require a full blown steering wheel to be at all playable. Something tells me this dRacer will be very playable with a standard keyboard, kinda like TT. Anyone know if that's true?

I can't wait to try it out.

Monday, November 29, 2004 at 1:53:49 PM

Oh I can't wait either. One thing, I hope that you will be able to skin. That would make it almost as good as tt.

W00t w00t! AWSOME!

Monday, November 29, 2004 at 2:37:43 PM
