Yeah, yeah, yeah, Green Day's a pop icon what with American Idiot and boulevard of Broken Dreams and waaake me uuup wheeen Seeepteeembeeer eeeends... But that's not the real them. Before they became the idols they are now, they had some REAL punk hits. You might have heard "When I Come Around" from 1994? I don't mean that. I mean:
-I Fought the Law: Cover of the Clash's 1971 song. BETTER cover of the Clash's 1971 song, actually.
-Shoplifter: Single released with American Idiot, sounds a lot like IFTL, except it fits into the Idiot story perfectly...
-Welcome to Paradise: Recorded in 1991, released in 1992, made famous in 1994. Still kick455.
-Longview: One of the more popular songs on my list, and by far the most explicit. A song about boredom.
-Basketcase: Ahh, who can forget that chorus: "Am I just paranoid? Am I just stoned?" or the video about rockin' outta rehab?
-Stuck With Me: SERIOUSLY underlooked song, collage-animation video, upbeat tempo... Where can you go wrong?
-Nice Guys Finish Last: A tale about the Green Day Packers. XD And how GD finishes first every time...
-Hitchin' a Ride: Don't booze and cruise! But, apparently, feel free to hitchhike if you've had a few too many. Okaaay...
-409 in your Coffeemaker: Just a miscellaneous tune I picked up from 39/Smooth, recorded when they were in their teens.
-Warning: The video's wrong on so many different levels it'll amuse anyone. Same album as Minority.
All of these songs except Warning, Shoplifter and I Fought The Law are downloadable in RM format at http://www.greenday.net/audio.html .
So what do you think? Old Green Day better? New GD better because they're superstars? IMO, they can try, but GD'll never be better than their old selves.
EDIT: Look up at this thread's URL, and you'll see 1039- as in 1039 Smoothed-Out Slappy-Happy Hours. XD REAL fans'll know what I mean.
