My sister has XM and she's really happy with it. I've listened to it as well and its great. I actually missed the commericals in the beginning, but you soon get over that. As far as reception goes, why do you think its satellite radio? ;) Apparently, that's great too since you're supposed to be able to pick up the signal virtually anywhere. That's the part I think I would like best. But then, there's the monthly subscription which I haven't found a need to pay since I mostly listen at work and Winamp has plenty of free stations that sound great (though you can listen to XM online as well). As far as the batteries go, the standalone and mobile devices are designed to plug into the wall or your car. I'm not even sure if they have portable, battery operated systems since the antenna system on a satellite radio is a bit cumbersome.
I love my XM in the car.

I have an XM radio, the non-portable kind and it's awesome. I use it primarily to listen to Yankees games and there is never ANY static. XM radio is great and its money well spent. Of course, if you like Football, then you are going to want Sirius Radio.
Bang for the buck: 9.5/10
Sound quality: 10/10
User interface (buttons etc): 9/10
;)
I like XM... But its in my car. So I dont know about the details on batteries and stuff like that. I also have it on my computer. You get it free with aim triton.

Don't go for XM.
Buy Sirius. All the shows and channels from XM are starting to go over to Sirius.
