Forums Index >> General >> Could using a proxy create dropped packet lag?
Page : <1> :
Could be, hard to check dropped packets on the server side. I tried looking into it once, couldn't find anything to beneficial in TT.
Usually proxys lag all online games, as they slow down the transmission a lot, and plenty times are busy and lose over 50% of the packets sent. So cadc, to play online games, NO proxies!
^ Tough luck for me then, my dad won't turn the thing off cus of viruses and hackers out there.
In anycase that's most likely my problem, although I've noticed it only happens on tt, any other online game is fine.
But believe me Blind Cide, u'r better off with me lagging every now and then, trust me B)

Ok dumb aussie question time. Whats a proxy? %)
And the dumb american to follow. I know you and I talked about this on email BC, but we'll go for more opinions. In MI banlist, for some reason, my firerate and "tank speed" is the worst out of any of the servers. I typically ping around 80-85 in there. In roo's and dash's, my ping is 105-115, yet my firerate etc. Is much better. In Snow's, my ping is about ten better than MI, but performance is amazingly better. Any thoughts on why it is only MI banlist that sucks for me? Memphis thinks it has something to do with my sleeping with the governor of Michigan's wife, but I just don't believe him.
@Three
The strange part of that equation is that the MI: and dash's are inches away from each other on the same network. The IA: and MI: servers are both run on Macs. The only thing I can figure is that more laggy players show up in the MI: than dash's. I use the MI: server for PSL games and I haven't heard one complaint about lag there all season.
It is indeed strange that you would experience that much difference. Memphis may be on to something.
It seems like all the smart people (-3) are at this thread, so I'll post this here. I installed a new graphics card (nvidia geforce 5200) in hopes of getting rid of lag, but I still seem kinda laggy. I know that card isn't exactly hardcore, but it should atleast be good enough for TT, right? There is some improvement- I can glide around smoothly w/ my settings at 800/600 details high, but I get laggy when I'm getting shot, near other tanks, when theres alot of action around me. I've tried going back to old settings- 640/480 details medium, but it doesnt seem to help much.
I don't run any other programs in the background (that I know of), my ping is good (40-70 in dash's, Roo's,and BC's), and my settings are 32/32/450. Why can't I get no satisfaction?
^ you could quadruple your equipment and still get the same lag, sux being on the east coast sometimes. Graphics and overall "smooth" feel may improve, but the pipe to the servers will f**k you up in game. We still got it better than a lot of others though, so make best of it.
Oh, next time I join game stop w. The GTG, just say it, "Done playing 'til the loser leaves" :)

Dude cant help you if your email dont show
So email me
@Racer
Please take the blinders off. He gets great performance on the (IA) server which is on a Mac. So that rules out the Linux vs Mac variable. The (MI) server is on the same really really fast connection as dash's, so that rules out the network as a problem.
@FIsh is it agp? I have the low end pci 5200 and it blows. Yes that could be why your experiencing lag. Going bigger and dropping the settings will help, but I think you will still feel it.
Mac servers. I believe they have the same set up as Linux servers, with -dsleep.

I saw Cadc complain about his "proxy security" in another post. Since he is a notorious lagger despite having a good ping, I wonder if using a proxy might cause dropped packets.
